"I am concerned about the quality of technical education in the country. Lest I be misunderstood, I am not referring to the IITs but to the ITIs. ITIs are the training ground for skilled manpower. The skills imparted by ITIs must keep pace with the technological demands of industry and the expanding universe of knowledge. There is only one benchmark for our technicians – and that is the world standard. In order to produce technicians of world standard, Government proposes to launch a program in the Central Sector to upgrade 500 ITIs over the next 5 years at the rate of 100 ITIs a year. Appropriate infrastructure and equipment will be provided, the syllabi will be upgraded and new trades will be introduced. This is an area where I welcome Chambers of Commerce and Industry to join hands with the Government and create a public-private partnership model for designing and implementing the scheme. The selection of the ITIs will be done in consultation with the State Governments"

Govt. of India decided to upgrade 100 ITIs in the country into "Centre of Excellence" in the first phase in the FY 2005-2006 through domestic resources and 400 ITIs through World Bank Assistance.
The institute has been upgraded into Centre of Excellence from Aug. 2006 in Automobile Sector.

- It Aims to produce appropriately qualified & skilled workers with excellent Employment & Career prospects, which meet the need of economy.
The objective is to upgrade the existing ITI’s into “Centre of Excellence (COEs)” for producing multi skilled workforce of world standard by
- Introducing new multi – skilled modular courses as per needs of industry.
- Improving physical infrastructure facilities like building, equipment etc.
- Adopting new training technology with close involvement of industry and other Stakeholders in planning and implementation of training programs.
- Empowering these Centers by providing sufficient autonomy in academic, Administrative, financial and management dimensions.
- Building up Partnership with the nearby industries and setting up of Institute Management Committees (IMCs) to make training wholly demand driven.
Structure of the Courses
- Broad based basic training in a number of skill areas related to the sector during the year.
- Short-term modular courses would be offered after the broad based training for the next 6 months.
- The trade testing for the first year broad based basic training as well as modular courses for the first 6 months during second year will be done.
- Specialized modular courses as per need of the local industry would be organized for the last phase of training.
- Training on the factory shop floor should constitute at least 25-40% of the curriculum.
